Glue ear current VS new pathway

Why Nurseries Matter

Children often spend more waking hours in nursery or childcare than they do at home. This makes nurseries a vital partner in helping us spot the early signs of glue ear and ensure children get the right support at the right time.

Forward-thinking nurseries know that hearing underpins a child’s development. Being able to hear well is essential for speech and language, behaviour, balance, learning, and overall well-being. Glue ear is one of the most common causes of hearing loss in early childhood, affecting 1 in 5 preschool children at any given time, yet it often goes unnoticed until difficulties with speech and language, and hearing begin to show.

What Partnership Involves

Encourage regular glue ear checks: Support parents in registering their children for the Universal Glue Ear Screening Programme, so any concerns are identified and managed quickly.

Raise awareness: Take part in our #BeGlueEarAware campaign by including a short reminder in your monthly newsletters to parents about the importance of hearing health.

Keep glue ear visible: Display our awareness poster on your parent noticeboard to help families stay alert to the signs.

Equip your staff: Each year, your team will receive training through our Hear to Learn programme, designed to help practitioners recognise glue ear and feel confident supporting children who use treatment devices.

Is your nursery Glue Ear Aware?

As a nursery, displaying our “Glue Ear Aware” Badge on your website usually means:
All the nursery teaching staff have attended our glue ear awareness course
The nursery has actively collaborated with us to deliver the Universal Glue Ear Screening Programme at their nursery (screening all children in the nursery for glue ear once per term).

Any use of the “Glue Ear Awareness” badge outside these terms are prohibited.

Why Nurseries Value the The Universal Glue Ear Screening

1 in 5 preschool children have glue ear at any given time in the UK. We help you identify that one child, so their parents can access timely advice or treatment before glue ear impacts their child’s development. We already work with some of London’s most forward-thinking nurseries. For them, the addition of the universal glue ear screening programme has become a clear differentiator, they understand that a child’s hearing is key to their development in various aspects including but not limited to their ability to speak clearly, learn, and follow instructions. By engaging in the programme, they are showing parents that the nursery is aware of the impact glue ear can have on childhood development, and has chosen the proactive approach to identify glue ear early. Parents view this commitment as a mark of quality, trust, and genuine care.
