Why Schools Matter
By the time children start Reception and Year One, they are entering a critical stage of development – learning to read, building vocabulary, developing social skills, and growing in confidence. At this age, undetected glue ear can have a lasting effect on speech and language, behaviour, balance, academic performance, and overall well-being.
Glue ear is one of the most common causes of hearing loss in early childhood, affecting 1 in 5 preschool children at any given time and as many as 8 out of 10 children before the age of 10. Yet in many cases it goes unnoticed, with children labelled as “distracted” or “falling behind” when in reality they are struggling to hear.
Forward-thinking schools know that supporting children to hear well is fundamental to helping them succeed. Reception and Year One are also the last critical phase before children typically begin to outgrow glue ear, as their eustachian tube becomes more adult-like around the age of 7–8. By joining as a School Partner, your school can help families act early ensuring no child’s learning is held back during these vital years.
What Partnership Involves
Encourage regular glue ear checks: Support parents in registering their children for the Universal Glue Ear Screening Programme, so any concerns are identified and managed quickly.
Raise awareness: Take part in our #BeGlueEarAware campaign by including a short reminder in your school newsletters about the importance of hearing health.
Keep glue ear visible: Display our awareness poster in your school reception or parent information area, helping families stay alert to the signs.
Equip your staff: Each year, your teachers and support staff will receive training through our Hear to Learn programme, designed to help practitioners recognise the signs of glue ear and feel confident supporting children who use treatment devices.
Is your school Glue Ear Aware?
As a nursery, displaying our “Glue Ear Aware” Badge on your website usually means:
☑ All the school teaching staff have attended our glue ear awareness course
☑ The school has actively collaborated with us to deliver the Universal Glue Ear Screening Programme at their nursery (screening all children in the nursery for glue ear once per term).
Any use of the “Glue Ear Awareness” badge outside these terms are prohibited.
Why Schools Value the Universal Glue Ear Screening
1 in 5 preschool children have glue ear at any given time, and 8 in 10 children will have glue ear before the age of 10 in the UK. We help you identify that one child, so their parents can access timely advice or treatment before glue ear impacts their child’s development. We already work with some of London’s most forward-thinking schools. For them, the addition of the universal glue ear screening programme has become a clear differentiator, they understand that a child’s hearing is key to their development in various aspects including but not limited to their ability to speak clearly, learn, and follow instructions. By engaging in the programme, they are showing parents that the school is aware of the impact glue ear can have on childhood development, and has chosen the proactive approach to identify glue ear early. Parents view this commitment as a mark of quality, trust, and genuine care.
